Time!
“So teach us to number our days, That we may present to You a heart of wisdom.” Psalm 90:12
From the moment of your birth, God has been the keeper of your time. He knows the exact amount of sand remaining in your hourglass. As believers, we are called to be good stewards of everything God has entrusted to us, including our time. This understanding of God’s sovereignty over time should bring us a sense of security and guidance in our daily lives.
The men of GHBC have been reading Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life by Donald Whitney (I highly recommend). He writes, “Many things can be lost but then regained. Many a man has declared bankruptcy, only to amass an even greater fortune later. Time is different. Once gone, it is gone forever and can never be regained. If you could galvanize every person on earth into the purpose of regaining time, the entire world’s efforts, wealth, and technology could not bring back one minute.” This underscores the irreplaceable nature of time, a precious gift that God has given to us. We must use it wisely.
Each person is given the exact amount of time each day. God gives us 24 hours. That is 1,440 minutes each day. How many of those minutes are wasted on things that have no eternal value? As followers of Christ, our lives should reflect His teachings. Our desires should line up with God’s Word. When Jesus was in the Garden of Gethsemane, John recorded Jesus’ prayer to the Father just before He was arrested. In that prayer, Jesus told the Father, “I glorified You on the earth, having finished the work which You have given Me to do (John 17:4).” Jesus used the time God gave Him to do the will of the Father.
When we came to saving faith, we became a new creation. The object of our love changed from self to God. It stopped being all about us; now it is all about Him.
So, ask yourself, are you being a good steward of the time God has given you? God does not promise us tomorrow. He has given us this day to live for Him. When that day comes when you have breathed your last breath, will you be able to echo the words of our Lord, “I glorified
