God’s Discipline!

For those whom the Lord loves He disciplines,     And He flogs every son whom He receives.”             Hebrews 12:6

I don’t know about you, but I don’t like to be disciplined. However, I know that it is necessary.  As a parent, you know the critical role of discipline in raising children. Discipline is crucial in the life of  a believer as well.

The writer of Hebrews, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, makes it clear that if you belong   to Christ, you will be disciplined. Just as God’s love has predestined us (Eph. 1:4–5) and redeemed us (John 3:16), it also disciplines us. When was the last time you thanked God for His discipline in your life? You might think, “Pastor Mark, you must have lost your mind. Why would I thank God for His discipline?” But we should be grateful for His discipline,   it reminds us of His love for us.

When a parent disciplines their child, they    do so because they want the best for them. A parent who does not discipline their child does not love them. God loves those he corrects. He  disciplines us to correct our sinful behavior. King    David clearly exemplifies God’s discipline of those He loves. Even though David was a man after      God’s own heart, God punished David for the sin of adultery and murder. In David’s penitential psalms, he acknowledges that God’s discipline is   just and deserving.

It is good for us to remember discipline is not the same as condemnation. God disciplines His children, but He does not condemn them. Romans 8:1 clarifies this: “There is now no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus“. Even though we may suffer because of our sins, we must understand that discipline has to do with training and growth, and condemnation has to do with punishment and guilt.

Your shepherd,

Pastor Mark
